YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO EXERCISE

A lot of people when they get into their middle-aged years if they are out of shape may be inclined to think that getting fit is a lost cause. They imagine in order to get into shape again requires many hours a week on the treadmill or long distance running. Actually, nothing could be farther from the truth. First of all it is never too late for anyone to start a fitness routine. And secondly the most effective training methods shouldn't take a person more than a few minutes a week to complete.

Exercise at a high intensity level interspersed with periods of moderate rest is known as high intensity interval training (HIIT). If you are middle-aged and out of shape you might think that this type of intense activity will be too much for you to handle. Certainly you must take the approach that you can only give your body as much as it can handle, but normally your body will tell you when it's had enough. Letting your doctor know that you are about to undertake an intense training program should put your mind at ease as your body's abilities to handle it.

Test after test have shown that exercise after 40 will provide multiple benefits. Lowering your existing heart rate and maximizing oxygen uptake are only a couple of ways that exercise can help people at middle-age. But the one wonderful benefit I would like to address here is how intense exercise will help naturally boost human growth hormone levels. This is vital for healthy aging and maintaining the vigorous lifestyle well into old age.

And what makes this hormone so important? The growth hormone, also known as Somatotropin is beneficial not only for bodybuilders, as we've heard so much about, but for everyone as they get into their middle years and over. These hormones act as a liaison as they pass messages to various endocrine glands using the blood as a carrier. The signals they send are the main way that new tissue growth is built. As we age, old tissue is constantly lost, and if it is not replaced by new tissue we gradually deteriorate through old age.

Increasing the growth hormone gives other medical benefits. To name a few they lower bad cholesterol levels and raise good cholesterol levels, reduce fat tissue, make it possible to increase lean muscle mass and give us more energy to exercise longer. Anything we can do to increase these levels should be a high priority.

The necessity of getting into intense training begins shortly after we start the aging process. We probably aren't aware of this, but when we reach our mid-20s to 30 years old we begin a process called somatopause. This is where our production of human growth hormone begins to decrease quite dramatically, and this is where the aging process begins. Maintaining your HGH levels take on a great importance as it addresses the issues of muscle loss and a trophy. But tests have shown that just because you miss this early window doesn't mean you can't make up for it in your midlife or even elderly years. Never assume that you're too old, as it's been well documented that you're never too old to begin intense exercising.

Endorphins are an important regulator of pain, but also pleasure.  Most people produce them through exercise, but certain foods, especially chocolate can produce a similar effect.  Read more about it on our website.  Rich Carroll is a writer and health advocate now living in Chicago.

THE DANGERS OF SITTING FOR TOO LONG

Sitting for long periods of time has been linked to a number of health hazards, especially with elderly people. In most cases, people can't help sitting for extended periods of time due to the nature of their work, but it's good to always know what kind of risks they are running into with matters pertaining to their well-being. Below are some of the complications and diseases that may arise as a result of sitting for too long.

Cardiovascular diseases: Sitting down means that there is zero mobility, so no energy is used and no calories are burnt. This results in fats accumulating in the heart, and sometimes causing blockage of veins; thus hindering blood flow in and out of the heart. This eventually causes heart related diseases, such as heart attacks and high blood pressure.

Swayback: This is a spine condition caused by too much stretching forward of the spinal cord. If a person doesn't sit straight up or simply slumps into a chair, the end result is a painful back due to a strained spine. Sitting on a chair with the back and the legs at a ninenty degrees angle can highly reduce the risk of this painful condition.

Deep vein thrombosis: Sitting causes slow blood circulation in the legs. It results in accumulation of fluids in the legs leading to blood clots and swollen ankles. While sitting, make sure that your feet touch the floor, this reduces the strain on the spinal cord and also helps in the circulation of blood.

Obesity: As one must eat, and no fat is converted to energy due to the inert position, it increases cholesterol in the body and it all ends up in the stomach and other parts of the body. This makes the person big and obese, which is a type of disease. Avoid snacks when not doing anything physical, instead take fluids, preferably water.

In order to avoid or reduce the risk of suffering from too much sitting related complications, exercise regularly. If finding time to perform any physical activities is impossible, then take small breaks in between your work. Walk around the office for five minutes after every two hours, it ensures free blood flow through the whole body. Movement stimulates the production of antioxidants, which remove toxins from the body through the lymphatic system. This will also help with good brain functions, because the more blood flows into the brain; the better it functions.

CAUSES OF BACK PAIN AND TREATMENT OPTIONS

Many of us will experience neck and back discomfort at least once in our lives. There are many reasons why many people have back pain. The following are some of the causes of back pains and complications.

Injury or accident:
For some people problems may be as a result of an injury or accident. Accidents lead to shock in the muscles and tendons. In severe cases it may be as a result of bone dislocation. It is advisable to seek medical assistance if the pain persists.

Poor posture:
For others the problems is as a result of slow and progressive increase of pain on the back. Sometimes the issue could be as a result of a continued poor posture. Usually a poor posture puts your head forward and exerts a lot of stress on the muscle in the back of the neck and the upper part of the shoulders. If you have a poor posture problem your muscles are constantly in a state of contraction which results in injury and discomfort.

Failure to exercise:
Failure to exercise opposing muscle groups can lead to neck, shoulder and back discomfort. The imbalance of muscle strength can lead to chronic or periodic pressure in these areas.

Lifestyle:
A sedentary lifestyle, obesity and lack of muscle tone may also lead to back complications. The neck and back share the same muscles and that means if one is negatively affected it will impact the other.

Treatment options:
The following are some of the safe and effective things to do. However, if your back does not benefit from these, the best thing will be to see a doctor.

Application of heat or ice:
Apply heat or ice on the specific area in a way that you feel comfortable. In other words, beside the fact that ice may be too cold, you should not feel pain as you do this. You may need to apply ice packs wrapped in towels for around 10 minutes after every 2 hours. On the other hand, you may need to apply heat instead of ice or use the two. Remember to have a cloth between your skin and the ice.

Massage:
Massage helps to increase blood flow to the muscles. It also improves muscle tone and assists your muscles to relax.

Medicines:
Use of pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin can bring the pain down.

Rest:
Try to lie comfortably in a well suspended bed and relax. The best position for your back is on your side with the knees bent.

HOW TO ACCEPT LIFE AS IT IS, NOT AS IT SHOULD BE

Do you "shoulda", "coulda", "woulda" yourself?

You know what I mean. I should clean the house today. I should make a gourmet meal. I should call up that friend. I should have visited that person. I should...

Or, I could have fixed that. I could have called more often. I could have taken them a meal.
Maybe you tell yourself. I would do that if I had more time. I would join that organization, volunteer, take that course, take time for myself, etc.

As women, we do this far too often. We find reasons why we don't take time for ourselves. We have been told by parents, bosses, spouses what we "should" be doing or what we "could" be doing with our time. And friends and acquaintances often feel free to tell us what they "would" do if they were us.

When was the last time that you went out with some of your female friends for a meal. Not just a brief coffee while you are looking after your children or before your spouse comes home, but a real meal with lots of time to relax and share stories and not worry about what is going on at home?

When is the last time that you danced in the rain, or painted or just sat down and read for a whole afternoon without worrying about what others would think? We can drive ourselves crazy trying to do what everyone expects us to do, or rather what we think everyone expects us to do. It is time to just accept things for what they are.

If you have children, you need to accept the fact that the house is going to get messy, that it is not going to be picture perfect. You will become tired as you try to keep up with them and it is okay to have a nap when needed instead of trying to clean. You can give yourself permission not to be perfect. This is a huge step for many of us women. This is not to say that you completely give up on ever having a clean house again, it is just realizing that the kids are more important than the house.

It's time to set yourself free! To accept who you are and what you want to do. Not what others think you should do. You will never "find" the time to do what you want. You have to make the time to do it and you need to realize and believe that you are worth it! If you want to quilt, find a group in your area to join, or start one. If you always wanted to paint, check the local artists to see if any of them are giving lessons. If you want to try pottery, or weaving or any new skill, check to see if there is a local artist group in your town and ask them who might be available.
Simplify your life by doing what you want to do, not what you should do. You will find you have more time for the things you enjoy. If you love to cook, then cook. If you love to dance, then dance. If you love to have friends over, then do that. If you love to read, then read. You owe it to yourself to take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally.

Dealing With Shame and Guilt - Ditch the Shame

I hope to educate others to recognize the differences between shame and guilt and how shame kills the soul.
Guilt says, I have done something wrong. Shame says there's something wrong with me. Guilt says I made a mistake. Shame says I am a mistake. The outcome of feeling shame can be debilitating, causing people to give up on their dreams, often feeling unloved, unworthy of happiness, depressed, anxious, angry, and hurt.

Shame can invade our lives at a young age. A parent who disciplines a child with purposeful assaults such as you're stupid, lazy, ugly, dumb, too fat, too skinny, can leave a child feeling that s/he doesn't measure up. A persistent and severe attack insults a person's soul leading to responses of rage and violence, drug addiction, eating disorders, compulsions, battery, and incarceration. The outcome of shame leaves a person feeling ridiculed, worthless, lacking sense of pride, self-respect and self-love.

Guilt is a feeling that acts as a catalyst to change our behavior without destroying our confidence. Shame is a dark emotion that seeps into our soul and robs us of our human dignity, feeling sinful, debauched, mean, diabolical; accused, judged and convicted as charged.
What are some of the sequence of events that leads to feeling shame?

A Vietnam vet returning from the war to a country that is angry at him for fighting a war. A person that is bullied in school because she is not wearing the right clothes. A man who is overweight and cannot fit in an airplane seat. A child that been overly corrected and told that they did not do the task correctly and to do it again, left with an over whelming feeling of not being good enough. A woman who has been raped while others said "she asked for it." A man was lost his job and can no longer provide for his family. A mother whose ex-husband speaks badly about her to their children. A birthday that was forgotten.

Shame leads to tears which leads to anger, and rage. Like a tragic song that is stuck on the same track and plays itself over and over again each and every day.

Learn Every Important Detail About Gonorrhea

Around the world, there are 60 million people contracting gonorrhea each year. In many countries including the United Kingdom it is mainly young people who are affected but the good news is that this STD is easy to cure. This does not mean that there are no problems when it is caught as it can lead to infertility and other serious health issues, so taking an STD test as soon as symptoms appear is advisable. As with the majority of sexually transmitted diseases it is caught through unprotected sex so the best way to prevent transmission is to use condoms for all sexual activities.

History
It is believed that this disease was known in biblical times, and its technical name is "Neustria gonorrhea" It is more commonly referred to as the clap or morning drip due to its symptoms.
Symptoms

Women tend to have few if any regular symptoms, but there is the risk of:-
   1.    Anal and genital itching
   2.    Painful and regular urination
   3.    Bleeding especially after intercourse
   4.    Fever and swollen glands

There are similar symptoms that men should look out for and these include:-

5. Pus seeping from the penis
6. Fever and tiredness
7. Anal itching
8. Frequent and painful urination

For anyone who thought that the only way to catch gonorrhea is through vaginal sex, it will be worrying to learn that the infection can be passed to the rectum through anal sex, and the eyes and throat through oral sex. Often conjunctivitis is caused by semen that has been infected getting into the eyes.STD tests should be carried out as soon as symptoms are discovered as there are ways to cure gonorrhea and the quicker this happens the better the results will be.

Gonorrhea Testing

Tests will involve urine or any other bodily fluid and will be classed as positive if the bacterium is found in the sample. Doctors can carry out the tests but it is also possible to find out the results without resorting to a medical examination. Medical centers will carry out the test for anyone who is happier with medical staff carrying out the procedure but it is possible to do it at home. The STD test kits are easy to use and the results will be swift and accurate.

Medication

Despite the fact that gonorrhea will be seriously damaging to the health it is possible to clear with antibiotics as long as it is detected before it takes hold. The main way to give the antibiotics is through an injection into either the thigh or buttocks and then a tablet. Improvement should normally be noticed within a couple of days although it should be expected that some pain and discomfort will still be felt a few weeks later. Even bleeding should be sorted out by the next period, and by the time the follow up meeting is attended and the test taken again, the infection should be totally cleared. To make sure that there is no re-infection, there should be no intercourse until the later tests give the all clear.
Do you need help with STD infection, STD tests, STI drugs and more? We can offer you STD test kits and guide you on how to deal with a positive STI result.

In the recent past, there has a great rise in the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer world wide. According to the world health organization, the number of breast cancer cases reported so far surpasses those of related diseases such as cervical cancer. However, cancer of the breast can be controlled if detected at its early stage. This makes regular medical checkups very important. At the same time, it is very important that we take food that prepares and boosts our immunity to fight this malignant cancer cells at their early stage. Foods and other dietary supplements have very important substances that can help our bodies to fight different types of diseases. The following are some of the foods mostly recommended that can prevent breast cancer.

7 Breast Cancer Triggers And How To Avoid Them

Statistically, 1:3 women and 1:2 men will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime. Those statistics are compelling reasons to be very proactive with your health and to understand the triggers that can lead to Breast Cancer, or any type of cancer.
Cancer cannot grow in a healthy body. Plain and simple. Your mission, therefore, is to make conscious choices that can help you prevent cancer. Here are 7 Breast Cancer Triggers that you can avoid:
1.) Inflammation

Inflammation occurs when your Immune System becomes over active and creates an environment of high oxidation. Think of oxidation as rust or when an apple slice turns brown after a few hours. A similar process occurs on a cellular level. inflammation is present at all 3 stages of tumor development: initiation, progression and metastasis.
You can reduce inflammation by increasing your green veggies with juicing and blending and adding fish oils to your diet. Remove all processed and artificial foods from your diet. Regular physical activity and refreshing sleep also reduce the inflammatory markers.
2.) Excess Insulin

Sugar feeds cancer. After years of sugar consumption from refined carbohydrates and simple sugars, an acidic environment is created, which cancer cells also love. Insulin and IGF (Insulin Growth Factor) are powerful messengers that promote cellular growth. Sugar also depresses your Immune System.
Eliminate sugar in all forms from your diet. Granny Smith apples, lemons and limes, and occasional berries are beneficial. Limit your grain consumption and replace them with quinoa and millet, which are classified as seeds.
3.) Methylation
This is a biological cycle that manages a variety of bodily functions. Problems with methylation occur if there is specific gene mutation that prevents the production of a specific enzyme. This can cause issues with detoxification, immune function, DNA repair, and energy production.
If you have high Homocysteine blood levels or if you would like to know if you have a methylation problem, I suggest you get tested to see if you have the gene mutation. If you do, there are nutritional supplements that will help reduce the effect of the mutation.
4.) Hormone Imbalance
Hormones are messengers that speak to each other and to all systems of the body. If there is too little estriol and too much estradiol, the more aggressive estradiol can cause cellular damage and increase your risk of Breast Cancer. If you are not metabolizing your estrogen properly, this can also increase your risk.
Determine Estrogen Quotient and the levels of your other hormones with a simple home testing saliva kit. (See Resources)
5.) Immune Dysfunction
The average person has over 200 foreign chemicals circulating in their body. These chemicals stress and exhaust the Immune System, distracting it from more important functions. As DNA mutations occur because of these chemicals, it is important that your Immune System be on the alert to capture any circulating cancer stem cells.
Keep your Immune System functioning at its peak by adopting a healthy lifestyle and being proactive with The 7 Essentials. There are specific supplements and foods that can help boost your Immune System as well.
6.) Insufficient Sleep
Stress and lack of sleep can turn off cancer-protective genes. Insufficient sleep prevents the body from healing and repairing. It slows down the detoxification pathways which puts your body at greater risk.
If you are not getting restful, relaxing and refreshing 7-8 hours of sleep, consider having your brain hormones tested to see what neuro-transmitters may be out of balance.
7.) Emotional and Mental Stress

Psycho-Neuro-Immunology (PNI) has taught us that the Nerve System, the Immune System and our mental health are all closely related. Think dark thoughts and your white blood cell count is reduced. Think happy thoughts of joy and gratitude and even your DNA responds in a positive way. Thoughts are energy and energy is transmitted by chemical and electrical pathways.

Practice being grateful for everything that is in your life. Focus on peaceful loving thoughts. Take time to meditate and pray every day. Visualize your body feeling healthy and strong. Visualize your perfect life and move towards it. If you find it difficult to mediate, there are many programs that can teach you to calm your mind and your body.
These 7 triggers are workable issues that can be prevented. Make a conscious effort to gain knowledge about the factors that you can control when it comes to your health. Be proactive with prevention by following The 7 Essentials.

Research on Spinal Curves

Since 1895, chiropractors have been adjusting spines and allowing individuals to enjoy a pain-free life. Did you know that the curves in your spine may be influencing your overall health. Let's take a look at what the research says.
Many health conditions have been studied as well as their physiological responses to spinal adjustments -- including hormone levels, circulation changes, blood pressure changes and a large number of other health parameters. However, one major question remains: how important are spinal curves in the overall health picture of an individual? Can alterations in the "normal" curve lead to a troublesome future or be the cause of a current condition?
With medicine, both traditional and alternative, constantly evolving, there is constantly new research being conducted and researchers are finding new and cutting-edge means of treating a variety of health conditions.
A recent study in the chiropractic field reported results after conducting a systematic critical literature review. This literature review gathered 54 published studies between 1942 and 2008. The content of these published studies was reviewed for quality and content. These studies looked at over 20,000 patients and the health of their spines. A sagittal curve is the curve you can see when you turn to the side.

Included in this review of research on spinal curves was a number of different types of studies and methods that were used to evaluate the sagittal curves of the lumbar spine (or lower back), thoracic spine (or mid back) and the cervical spine (or neck). Thirty eight studies examined the lower back. Thirty four studies examined the middle back. Six studies took a look at the cervical spine.
Data was obtained by:
25 studies used plain x-rays
1 study used MRI
3 studies conducted by visual analysis or by the eye.
21 studies used a variety of instruments to collect data.
Findings:
A strong association was reported in five of the studies when it comes to an increased angle in the thoracic spine (referred to as kyphosis or "humpback") with lung disorders that can lead to difficulty breathing. Poor physical function and pelvic organ prolapse were also associated with spinal curves of the middle back.
Researchers found that when the curve of the lower back was reduced (lordosis), subjects in these studies experienced lower back pain. Similarly, osteoporotic compression fractures of the thoracic spine were moderately associated with kyphosis.
Kyphosis is also moderately associated with uterine prolapse, heavy household activities and even death in three of the studies that researchers looked at.
It is also important to note that many of these studies found no association with spinal curves and health conditions.
More research needs to be conducted on spinal curves in order to determine if curves impact overall health
